The Green's Bridge is a road bridge over the River Nore in Kilkenny ( Ireland ). It connects Green Street with New Road in the north of the inner-city area. John's Bridge is on the southern edge of the center, with a pedestrian walkway called Lady Desart Bridge in between . A road bridge just below Green's Bridge is expected to be completed in 2016. The extra-urban traffic uses a bypass road in the south.

description

The Green's Bridge, built between 1765 and 1766, is a stone arch bridge with five basket arches made of carefully hewn limestone, to which two arched culverts connect over the eastern flood bed. The arched foreheads are profiled and interrupted by protruding cuboids, a design attributed to James Gibbs , which in the English-speaking world is called Gibbs surround . The pillars are adorned with aedicules above the flow dividers . A long frieze forms the upper end of the bridge facade .

It was designed by Kilkenny-based architect and civil engineer George Smith and built by William Colles, an entrepreneur who ran two quarries in the area and developed machines for cutting and working stone.

The bridge is based heavily on Palladio's illustration of the Roman Ponte d'Augusto in Rimini , which he published in his Quattro libri dell'architettura , published in 1570 , which was translated into English in 1715 by Giacomo Leoni , who worked in England , who thus pioneered the Palladianism was. It is noticeable that the real Ponte d'Augusto had the aedicule on the pillars and the frieze as the upper end, but with very wide pillars without flow dividers it stands relatively low in the water, but in Palladio's illustration it is significantly slimmer and higher piers with flow dividers Has.

The bridge's lane was generously dimensioned for carriages and wagons, but today it is just wide enough for two cars to meet each other. Therefore, in 1969 the northern balustrade was removed, replaced with a metal railing and a metal construction was added to the side, with a sidewalk and various lines wearing. The sight of the bridge from the northern side is therefore considered ugly.

The bridge is a listed building .

In 2016, construction of a wide road bridge just below Green's Bridge began as part of Kilkenny’s Central Access Scheme (CAS), which has been controversial for years . It remains to be seen that, after the completion of this construction project, the Green's Bridge will be renovated and restored to an all-round attractive condition.
