The Green Law is a 525 m high hill in the chain of the Pentland Hills . It is located in the west of the Scottish Council Area Midlothian on the eastern flank in the center of the approximately 25 km long range of hills. The hamlet of Carlops is about 3.5 kilometers south; the small town of Penicuik 6.5 km northeast. The North Esk Reservoir was dammed about 1.5 kilometers to the southwest . The neighboring hills are the Cap Law and the Braid Law in the northeast, the Spittal Hill in the south and the Cock Rig in the west. Grass cover covers the Green Law. In its name, reference is made to the resulting green color. The hill was formed in the Silurian Age .

Surroundings

Traces of agricultural use can be found along the Gutterford Burn Stream , which runs between Cock Rig and Green Law. These include the remains of agricultural buildings that were partially used until the middle of the 19th century. The remains of Gutterford Farm are a good example of the importance of sheep farming in the Pentland Hills over centuries.

A cross was once erected on the ridge between Green Law and Braid Law. After its destroyed, ornamented shaft was still in place at the beginning of the 19th century, today only the approximately 1 m × 70 cm measuring base plate remains.
