Green Mountain is a national park and mountain on Ascension , an island in the British overseas territory of St. Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic .
Green Mountain, also known locally as The Peak , is the highest point on the island at 859 m .
geology
The terrain around Green Mountain is of volcanic origin and was formed in the period of approximately 0.7 to 0.5 million years BP . It is made up of massive pyroclastic fall deposits (especially pumice ); the south-western flanks of the mountain consist mainly of trachyte .
The Green Mountain is the type locality of the rare mineral dalyite .
National park
As Green Mountain National Park , the area has been proclaimed a national park since 2005. It belongs to the IUCN category V. The area has been protected due to its nature and historical importance.
There are seven hiking trails, picnic areas and campsites available for visitors.
Flora and fauna

Green Mountain National Park is home to a wide variety of seven (originally 10) endemic and numerous introduced plants.
The existing endemic species are:
- Anogramma ascensionis
- Asplenium ascensionis
- Euphorbia origanoides
- Ptisana purpurascens
- Pteris adscensionis
- Sporobouls caespitosus
- Xiphopteris ascensionense
fauna
Numerous species of birds as well as insects and butterflies can be found in the reserve, including:
- Francolinus afer
- Gygis alba
- Acridotheres tristis
- Serinus flaviventris
- Estrilda astrild
- Hemidactylus mercatorius
- Gecarcinus lagostoma
Domestic sheep, cattle, chickens and rabbits can also be found in the national park.
