The canton was created in 2015 with the reorganization of the cantons in France from parts of dissolved cantons in the city of Rennes.

In the first ballot on March 22, 2015, none of the five voting pairs achieved an absolute majority. In the runoff election on March 29, 2015, Damien Bongart / Catherine Debroise (both PS) won against Antoine Cressard / Laurence Taillandier (both Union de la Droite) with 58.77% of the vote (turnout: 46.35%).
