The canton of Châteaugiron (Breton canton Kastell-Geron ) is a French constituency in the arrondissements of Fougères-Vitré and Rennes , in the department of Ille-et-Vilaine and in the region of Brittany ; its main town is Châteaugiron .

history

The canton was established on February 15, 1790. From 1801 to 1971 ten municipalities belonged to the canton of Châteaugiron (1793-1801 also called canton Montgiron or canton Chateaugiron). In 1971, the municipality of Veneffles became part of the municipality of Châteaugiron. From 1971 to 2015, nine municipalities then belonged to the canton of Châteaugiron. With the reorganization of the cantons in France, the number of communes rose to 14. In 2015, three of the previous nine communes moved to other cantons. Brécé to the canton of Liffré , Nouvoitou and Saint-Armel to the canton of Janzé . In addition to the remaining 6 communes of the old canton of Châteaugiron, all 6 communes of the canton of Châteaubourg and 2 of the previous 6 communes of the canton Janzé were added.

The canton is located in the south-eastern center of the Ille-et-Vilaine department, east and south-east of Rennes.
