The fragrant mango or kwini ( Mangifera odorata ) is a plant from the genus of mangos ( Mangifera ) within the sumac family (Anacardiaceae) that is often cultivated in East and Southeast Asia . It is a fertile hybrid of the common mango ( Mangifera indica ) and the smelly mango ( M. foetida ). It is often grown in Borneo , Sumatra and Java , less often in the south of Vietnam , in Thailand as well as in the Philippines , the Christmas Islands and Guam . It thrives at heights of up to 1000 meters and tolerates more humid locations than the M. indica . Their exact origin is unknown and there are no wild populations.

features

The appearance of the Fragrant Mango lies between that of the two parent species. It grows as a medium-sized tree with a height of 10 to 15, only rarely over 20 meters. The trunk is straight with gray bark, the treetop is spherical to broadly oval. The leaves are leathery to parchment-like and elongated-lanceolate, 12 to 35 by 4 to 10 cm in size and stalked 3 to 7 cm long. The leaf margin is smooth, the tip pointed. The leaf veins stand out clearly, especially on the underside.

The flowers are in terminal, 15 to 50 cm long, densely flowered panicles . The five, rarely six-fold flowers are very fragrant. The sepals are egg-shaped, 3 to 4 mm long and reddish brown or greenish. The petals are lanceolate, bent back, 5 to 6 mm long and whitish with a yellowish base and pale pink tip. Of the stamens, the only fertile one is about 5 mm long, the four, rarely five, staminodes measure only 1.5 to 2 mm. The approximately spherical ovary is yellowish with a 3 to 5 mm long, eccentrically arising, dark red style.

The fruit is a obliquely elongated-elliptical stone fruit 10 to 13 cm long and 6 to 9 cm wide. It is green to yellowish green with a few dark brown lenticels . The skin is 3 to 4 mm thick, the pulp orange-yellow, firm, fibrous, juicy and sweet and sour with a pungent smell and taste of turpentine . The stone is relatively large with dimensions of 8 to 10 cm by 4.5 to 5 cm by 2.5 to 3 cm.

While the exudate from the rind is relatively mild, the milky juice of the unripe fruit and the peel is highly caustic.

Use in the kitchen

The fruits are used in curries and pickles , varieties with a less pronounced turpentine aroma are also used as fruits. The ground kernels are used as a spice in Java.
