features

The stinking mango grows as a tree up to 35 meters high with a straight trunk without buttress roots . The slightly structured bark is light brown to dark gray-brown. When injured, it gives off a whitish sap that quickly turns black and is very irritating to the skin. The densely leafed tree crown is supported by strong branches. The leaves are elliptical-ovate to broadly elliptical, leathery and 15 to 40 centimeters long and 9 to 15 centimeters wide. Its tip is slightly pointed, sometimes rounded or notched. Its upper side is a strong dark green, the lower side lighter. The petiole is strong, 1.5 to eight inches long and thickened at the base. They are used in traditional medicine as an antipyretic.

The inflorescences are upright, pyramidal, densely flowered panicles ten to 14 centimeters in length. The flowers are strong reddish-pink, five-fold and poor in fragrance. The sepals are oblong-egg-shaped and four to five millimeters long, the petals six to nine millimeters long narrow-lanceolate, paler at the base and yellowish at the tip. The stamens are dark purple. The ovary is nearly spherical, yellow and wearing a white, six to seven millimeters long stylus .

The fruit is an egg to almost spherical, olive to yellow-green stone fruit seven to 16 centimeters long. The pulp is always fibrous and, depending on the variety, sour with a strong turpentine odor or sweet with a mild taste. Sweet varieties are consumed as fruit , while the others are used in pickles , chutneys, and curries . The unripe fruit is just as irritating as the juice given off by the rind , with the ripe fruit only the skin is irritating, so that it can be consumed after peeling. The seeds are used to treat trichophytosis , scabies, and eczema .

Origin and Distribution

The smelly mango originally comes from the humid lowland rainforests of the Malay Peninsula and Indonesia . It is grown in Southeast Asia up to an altitude of 1000 m.
