The canton was created in 2015 with the reorganization of the cantons in France from parts of dissolved cantons in the Rennes region.

In the first ballot on March 22, 2015, none of the five voting pairs achieved an absolute majority. In the runoff election on March 29, 2015, François André / Véra Briand (both PS) won against Johann Caillard / Anaïs Jehanno (both UMP ) with a share of the vote of 54.71% (turnout: 47.70%).
