Green Park is an underground station on the London Underground in the City of Westminster . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 1 and is located on the northeast corner of Green Park , near the intersection of Piccadilly and Queen's Walk. Here three lines cross on different levels. Below the distribution level with the counter hall are the platforms of the Piccadilly Line , including those of the Victoria Line and the Jubilee Line . In 2014, 39.83 million passengers used the station.

history

When the first section of the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway (predecessor of the Piccadilly Line) opened on December 15, 1906, the station was still called Dover Street . At the beginning of the 1930s it was completely rebuilt; the entrance was moved a little to the east to make room for escalators . During construction, the nearby Down Street station was closed . The converted station was renamed Green Park on September 18, 1933 after the work was completed.

From the mid-1960s, the station had to be significantly expanded. The reason for this was that Green Park had developed into a major transport hub within just ten years. The platforms of the Victoria Line began operating on March 7, 1969, those of the Jubilee Line on May 1, 1979. A bomb placed by the Provisional Irish Republican Army exploded in front of the station entrance on October 9, 1975, killing a passer-by .

After its opening, the Jubilee Line initially led to Charing Cross . However, this terminus has been closed since 1999 because the route has been swiveled towards Westminster . The old tunnel can still be seen from the southern end of the platform. Because of the terrorist attacks of July 7, 2005 , the Piccadilly Line station was closed for a few weeks, and it was reopened on August 4.
