history
As early as 1147 a church building was recorded at the site, which was subordinated to the Kelso Abbey . In 1242 the building was consecrated and possibly dedicated to Saint Helena . Today's Greenlaw Church was probably built in 1675 on the site of the medieval church. In 1712 the building was extended to create a connection with the tower built in 1696. An extension was made in 1855 and the interior renovated in 1883.
description
Greenlaw Church stands in the middle of the surrounding cemetery between Church Street and Queen's Row in the center of Greenlaw. The bell tower is not accessible on the church side. This fact is due to the fact that the tower was used as a prison until the 19th century. The inmates could watch the services through a barred window. An adjacent courthouse was demolished in 1830. A cross plate from the 15th century is set into the west side of the tower . The initials AH ( Alexander Home, 2nd Lord Home ) and IL (his wife Isobella) are engraved on the 124 cm × 64 cm plate .
The old market cross on the west side dates from 1609. It originally stood on the town's market square. Today's Greenlaw Market Cross is in front of Greenlaw City Hall .
