Gregor K. Wenning

Gregor Karl Wenning (born March 21, 1964 in Horstmar ) is a German neurologist . Since 2006 he has been head of the department for clinical neurobiology at the Medical University of Innsbruck .

Life and education

Wenning was born as the son of the secondary school teacher Karl-Heinz Wenning and the secretary Elisabeth Wenning, geb. Terwort, born, one of his brothers is the church musician Martin Forciniti . From 1983 to 1990 he took a scholarship from the studienstiftung a study of medicine at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster (Westphalia), where he graduated with a doctorate in motor system degeneration. In 1995 he completed his studies in multiple system atrophy (MSA) with a Ph.D. at the University of London . He then became a university assistant at the University Clinic for Neurology in Innsbruck. On July 1, 1999, he completed his habilitation at the Medical Faculty of the University of Innsbruck (topic: Multi-system atrophy: clinical and experimental findings). On August 24, 1999 he was appointed associate professor for neurology at the Innsbruck Medical Faculty. In the same year he became a specialist in neurology and psychiatry. In December 2007 he was awarded the title Master of Health Economics by the Private University for Health Sciences, Medical Informatics and Technology (UMIT), Hall in Tirol. Wenning has been the director of the Dysautonomy Center at the Medical University of Innsbruck since 2018.

He has been married to the neurologist Roberta Granata since 1995 and has two sons.

Act

The scientific focus of his work is the research of atypical Parkinson's syndromes , especially multi-system atrophy (MSA), by means of experimental, clinical-pathological and therapeutic studies. In addition to the care of patients with Parkinson's syndromes and dementias , the clinical work also includes the clarification of orthostatic disorders using tilting table diagnostics. Gregor K. Wenning has been Professor and Head of the Department of Clinical Neurobiology at the Medical University of Innsbruck (MUI) since 2006 with the following components: Experimental neurodegeneration laboratory, autonomous functional laboratory and EMSA-SG coordination center. In 2007, he participated in the neuroscientific doctoral program “Signal Processing in Neurons” (SPIN) at the MUI, whose funding was extended in 2010. Wenning has been the deputy spokesman for the FWF special research area "Cell signaling in chronic CNS disorders" since 2010.

In June 2011 Wenning was in the prima fila of Pope Benedict XVI. to present a South Tyrolean statue of Augustine and three works of Augustine written by him.

Honourings and prices

From 1992 to 1994 Gregor K. Wenning was a fellow of the UK Parkinson's Disease Society. In 1998 he was awarded the Science Prize of the Austrian Parkinson Society (first award). In 2004 he also received the Oppenheimer Prize for MSA Research for the first time.
