Gregor Lange (Chief of Police)

Gregor Lange (* 1962 in Dortmund ) is a German lawyer and has been the police chief in Dortmund since March 2014 . Together with around 3,000 employees, he is responsible for the safety of around 700,000 residents in Dortmund and Lünen.

Career

Gregor Lange is married and has three children. He is a member of the SPD . He studied law and history at the University of Bonn .

After the second state examination in law, Gregor Lange joined the regional government in Arnsberg in 1993, and in 1998 he moved to the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of the Interior , where he worked as a consultant for the protection of the constitution with political extremism until 2003 .

From 2003 to 2009, Lange headed the “Mont-Cenis” training academy in Herne, and from 2009 to 2010 was responsible for human resources, again at the Arnsberg district government. Before his appointment as police chief in Dortmund, Gregor Lange was department director at the Münster district government for regional development, urban planning, municipal supervision and economy.

On March 1, 2014, Lange took over the task of Dortmund Police President as the direct successor to Norbert Wesseler .

Since 2017 he has assumed the chairmanship of the Working Group of Police Presidents of Germany. In this committee, security-relevant questions of nationwide importance are discussed and discussed; Gregor Lange controls the coordination and planning from the Ruhr area.

Special focus

As the chief of police in the largest city in the Ruhr area, Gregor Lange placed a clear focus on fighting right-wing extremism and anchored a "zero tolerance strategy". In 2015 he founded the special commission “Legal”, which is now known nationwide for repression and control pressure against right-wing extremism. The Dortmund Police Headquarters also uses its legal options to protect the population as an assembly authority and to avert danger.

Gregor Lange established the “zero tolerance strategy” of the North Rhine-Westphalian Minister of the Interior Herbert Reul , particularly in Dortmund's Nordstadt district, a multicultural district of Dortmund with a higher level of criminality . With regular focus and control missions , the pressure on the drug trade , but also on criminal structures and clan crime, is kept high.
