Gregory VI. (Pope)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gregory VI. (born Johannes Gratianus Pierleoni ; † probably November 1047 in Cologne ) was Pope from 1045 to 1046. He should not be confused with the antipope of the same name from 1012.

Before his brief pontificate , Gregory VI was. since 1012 cardinal priest and archpriest of San Giovanni a Porta Latina . In 1045 he bought from Pope Benedict IX. whose godfather he was, held the papal office for £ 1,000 silver, although he himself was an opponent of all simony . On May 1, 1045 he was elected to the papacy. Later, however, both Gregory and Benedict themselves stuck to their claim to be the rightful Pope. Since at the same time also New Year III. was elevated to pope, three popes now ruled Rome simultaneously.

Most churchmen stood by Gregory, who wanted to put an end to the grievances of the church. The German King Heinrich III. however, convened the Synod of Sutri on December 20, 1046 , which declared all three popes unlawful and instead elevated Bishop Suidger of Bamberg as Clement II to pope in Rome on December 24 .

Gregory was exiled to Cologne , where he was accompanied by a young monk named Hildebrand, who later became Pope Gregory VII. Gregory VI. probably died in Cologne in November 1047.
