history

Hill settlement of the Michelsberg culture

In an archaeological excavation from 2011 on the Greifenberg, the remains of a fortified hilltop settlement of the Michelsberg culture between 4400 and 3500 BC were found. Above and next to the Neolithic settlement were three circular trenches of Bronze Age burial mounds , the burials of which, often in the middle, were unfortunately destroyed in the course of time due to agricultural use.

Evidence of the Iron Age is the rare find of a coin known as the so-called dancing man . This Celtic silver quinine was made between 65 and 40 BC. BC minted among other things in the Heidetränk-Oppidum near Oberursel in the Taunus, but was probably still in circulation much longer as a means of payment. It matches the excavation finds from Limburg Domberg from 2009. These and other finds from 1989 point to a 500 BC. Close the Celtic settlement on the Toompea.

Battle of Limburg

Memorial plaque on the Greifenberg

At the Battle of Limburg , the Greifenberg was part of the battlefield. The Kreuzkapelle was largely destroyed here. The Austrian ski jump on the mountain from this battle can still be seen today.

Recreation area

From around 1900 the Greifenberg and the Kasselbachtal (in local parlance "Tal Josaphat") running south of it were created as a local recreation area. The Limburg Beautification Association, which no longer exists today, set up a park northwest of the hilltop. Today only a few remains of the enclosure and a viewing pavilion are preserved, which allow a view of the Lahn valley and the motorway and Lahn valley bridge (NBS Cologne-Rhein / Main) .

Buildings

Station 1 of the Way of the Cross

A way of the cross leads from the Josaphat valley up to the Greifenberg to the Kreuzkapelle. The Josef Bielefeld Hut is located on the summit.

At an unknown point in time, an elevated water tank was built on the Greifenberg to supply the railway repair shop at the station . It is still there today, but is no longer in use.
