Greifswald weekly paper

The Greifswaldische week-sheet , full title gripping Waldi MOORISH weeks Sheet by all kinds of learned and useful things to hold good science and promotion of the common good , was in 1743 in Greifswald published magazine .

Appear

The Greifswaldisches Wochen-Blatt was published weekly in 1743, in a total of 52 issues of 8 pages each.

The editor of the Greifswald weekly paper was the theologian Jakob Heinrich von Balthasar (1690–1763), professor at the University of Greifswald . He worked closely with his younger brother Augustin von Balthasar (1701–1786). The magazine thus appeared in the context of the Societas collectorum historiae et iuris patrii , founded on August 1, 1742 to maintain Pomeranian historical research , in which Augustine von Balthasar played the leading role. The publisher was Jacob Löffler in Greifswald and Stralsund .

The discontinuation of the magazine at the end of 1743, i.e. after exactly one year, is likely due to a lack of profitability.

The complete magazine year was also provided with a title page by the publisher, a mixed collection of all kinds of learned and useful things, so far issued under the name of the Greifswaldisches Wochenblatt by Jacob Henrich Balthasar and sold as a book.

content

The booklets primarily contain theological and legal articles. Contributions to the history of Pomerania , especially Greifswald, as well as biographies by professors from the University of Greifswald should also be mentioned. Furthermore, excerpts from the correspondence of the long-deceased Greifswald theologian Johann Friedrich Mayer (1650–1712) are printed.

The contributions in the Greifswaldisches Wochen-Blatt are all anonymous.

According to Zunker (1956), the magazine “certainly gives a good reflection of the intellectual life that prevailed in Greifswald university circles at that time”.
