The von Greyerz family ( Gruyers, Gryers ) is a family from Greyerz that has owned the citizenship of the city of Bern since the 14th century .

history

The von Gruyères family first became tangible in Bern in the 14th century. In written sources, Johannes received the nickname Wala (Walch, Welscher), which indicates the French-speaking origin (Gruyère). There are no genealogical connections with the Friborg counts of Greyerz , which died out in 1575 , although the Bernese Greyerz bear the coat of arms of the count's family. Peter Greyerz , who was proven to be a small councilor in 1433, is considered to be the progenitor. The sons of Hans von Greyerz formed the two main lines of the sex. The older line of the multiple Landvogts Hans von Greyerz († 1588), which died out around 1700, was partly active in the iron trade and provided several members of the Grand Council and Landvogte, while the younger, flourishing line of Albrecht von Greyerz belonged to the Society of Webern from 1750 and until 1798 in lower municipal offices, as clergy and craftsmen were active.

Walo von Greyerz, who is said to have snatched Bern's banner from the enemy in the battle of Schosshalde (1289), is legendary .
