Kaspar of Gruyeres

Hans Kaspar von Greyerz (born May 11, 1947 in Bern ; authorized to live there ) is a Swiss historian .

Life

The son of the historian Hans von Greyerz first began studying law, but soon switched to history and philosophy . He studied at the universities of Bern and Geneva and graduated with the state examination. From 1973 to 1979 he completed a doctorate at Stanford University , where he was a scholarship holder of the Institute for European History Mainz from 1975 to 1978 and the Swiss National Science Foundation in 1979/80 . In 1979 he received his doctorate . From 1980 to 1985 Kaspar von Greyerz was a research associate at the German Historical Institute in London . In 1987 he completed his habilitation in Bern. From 1988 to 1991 he was Hartmut Lehmann's chair at Kiel University . From 1991 to 1993 he was an Athena scholarship holder of the Swiss National Science Foundation.

From autumn 1993, von Greyerz, succeeding Peter Stadler , was a full professor of modern general and Swiss history at the University of Zurich . From spring 1997 until his retirement in summer 2013, he was Professor of Early Modern History at the University of Basel . In the summer of 2002 he was visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley , in March 2003 he was Directeur d'études invité at the 5th section of the École pratique des hautes études in Paris and in 2003/2004 he was a scholarship holder of the History College in Munich . In 2005/2006 von Greyerz was Dean of the Philosophical-Historical Faculty of the University of Basel.
