The Greymouth Star is a regional daily newspaper in New Zealand . Its catchment area is in the central part of the West Coast region on the South Island . The newspaper is based in Greymouth .

history

The Greymouth Star has its origins in the founding of the Greymouth Evening Star in 1866 by the British newspaper maker James Snyder Browne , making it the sixth oldest newspaper still in existence in New Zealand. The Greymouth settlement was just 12 months old at the time, and a Māori - two years earlier . In this respect, publishing a newspaper at such an early stage in a settlement was a challenge. The first publication of the newspaper is dated March 18, 1866 and was a present for Irish St. Patrick's Day , which is celebrated on March 17.

Browne published the Evening Star on four pages daily from day one. From November 1865 on, the Gray River Argus appeared three times a week , but Browne reckoned that the gold rush in the Greymouth area would be sustained and that another daily newspaper would have a chance in the future.

In 1869, Browne sold the newspaper to Irish newspaper maker, John Tyrell , founder of the Hokitika Evening Star (1865) and the West Coast Times (1865). Tyrell took over as editor-in-chief with the purchase of Joseph Petrie . Petrie , who later served as mayor and held several chairmanships parallel to his job, gave the Greymouth Evening Star a face for over 42 years , including 33 years as editor-in-chief. The newspaper was his mouthpiece.

Tyrell soon sold the Evening Star to RC Reid and Co. and after Joseph Ives took over the newspaper in 1874, he sold it a year later to Petrie , who continued to manage it until his death in 1908. Petrie founded Greymouth Evening Star Co Limited on May 5, 1891 , in which he held around 35% of the shares and divided the remainder among 74 shareholders. Petrie sold the newspaper to the company that has published it ever since. In 1995, Allied Press Limited , which publishes the Otago Daily Times in Dunedin , took over 51% of the company's shares.

When the Greymouth Evening Star was renamed Greymouth Star is currently unclear, but must have happened after the takeover of the majority by Allied Press Limited in 1995.
