Grimmelshausen High School

The Grimmelshausen-Gymnasium Offenburg is a high school in Offenburg ( Ortenaukreis ). It has 660 students and around 50 teachers. With an age of more than 350 years it is the oldest of the four grammar schools in Offenburg. It is characterized by special foreign language support and the offer of a Franco-German Abitur ( AbiBac ).

history

The school was founded in 1660 by the Franciscan and Minorite Order, who had been running a monastery in Offenburg since 1280. After the fire in 1689, the monastery was rebuilt. Today it is entered in the Baden-Württemberg monument book. In 1803 the monastery school was nationalized in the course of secularization . From 1808 to 1990 the school looked after the remains of the library of the monastery, which had also been closed, and was housed in the Capuchin monastery from 1822 . The Capuchin monastery is the oldest building in the city and the only one that survived the fire of 1689.

In 1937 the school was named after Johann Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen . Born in Gelnhausen, he is considered the most important German writer of the Baroque and lived in the Ortenau in the second half of the 17th century .

The grammar school also partly uses the rooms of the former Capuchin monastery.
