Grimoald II (Bavaria)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Grimoald von Baiern († before 725 ) was a son of the Bavarian Duke Theodo II and grandson of Agilolf von Baiern from the Agilolfinger family . From 702 to 723 Grimoald was Duke of the Bavarians in the part of the tribal duchy of Baiern - Freising .

Theodo II appointed him co-regents with his brothers Theudebald , Theudebert and Tassilo II . After the death of his father in 718 and his brothers Theudebald and Tassilo II, he ruled as co-regent of his brother Theudebert. He also married Pilitrud , the widow of his late brother Theudebald, presumably to secure his position of power. Pilitrud is known as an exquisite beauty ( adulterina dilectatione ) and, because of her noble descent, also had political significance. However, this marriage brought him into conflict with the missionary Korbinian , who declared the marriage to be illegal and had to flee to Tyrol.

When his brother Theudebert finally died in 724, he tried to seize power completely and to oust his nephew Hugbert from rule. Hugbert then fled to the Franconian Empire and asked the Frankish king's powerful caretaker, Karl Martell , for help. In the following year (725), Karl Martell advanced against the Bavarian tribal duchy. From Arbeo of Freising no connection is established between the intervention Frankish troops and the murder Grimoalds; perhaps Hugbert had him out of the way with the help of some Lombard opponents ( insidiatores ). The price he had to pay for it was the cession of Bavarian areas in South Tyrol to the Longobard Empire.
