The Große Kiesau is a street in Lübeck's old town .

location

The approximately 160 meter long Große Kiesau is located in the northwest of the old town island, in the Marien-Magdalenen quarter . It begins at the Engelsgrube and runs in a south-westerly direction until it meets the Fischergrube opposite Ellerbrook and ends.

history

The Große Kiesau is first mentioned in 1317 as Kysow . The name literally means gravelly meadow and referred to a no longer existing stream with a gravel bed that ran near the nearby Alsheide . In 1347 the name Kysowdwerstrate (Kiesauquerstraße) is recorded, in 1447 the Latin name Antiqua Kysow (Alte Kiesau) to distinguish it from the eponymous Kleine Kiesau in the south of the city. The Low German version Oude Kiesouwe is documented in 1463, and Kysouw in 1608 . In 1852 Kiesau was set as the street name, but in 1884 it was expanded to the name used today.

Buildings

The Große Kiesau was not affected by the air raid on Lübeck on March 29, 1942 and therefore still has a largely closed historical development that extends from the 16th to the 19th century.

Under conservation are the houses 1, 3, 5 (the building of the cross-passage ), 8-12, 14-15, 18, 28, 40, 42, 44, 46 and 48th
