The Great Church in Burgsteinfurt is the main church of the Evangelical Parish of Burgsteinfurt.

history

The oldest church in Steinfurt is located outside the city in an open area. It was originally dedicated to the Irish monk Willibrord, who worked as a missionary in northern Westphalia during the Saxon period. The church stands on foundations from pre-Romanesque times. In the 9th century a small wooden chapel was built on the site of the Great Church. When the Order of St. John maintained the Kommende Steinfurt there in 1222 , the wooden church had already given way to today's stone church. On the south side of the church you can see some Romanesque wall remains of the previous building.

The first Protestant service was held on January 25, 1564 in the Great Church.

In spring 1990 part of the tower collapsed during hurricane Vivian and destroyed large parts of the old barrel vault. The organ was also damaged. After the damage had been repaired with funds from a fundraising campaign, services in the Great Church were resumed in December 1991.

In Burgsteinfurt there is not only the large church but also the small church , which is also used by the Evangelical parish .

Surname

When a second church was built in Burgsteinfurt in 1380, the older and bigger one was named "Big Church" and the other was named "Little Church".

Style and decor

It is essentially a Romanesque building. Later some Gothic elements were added (pointed arched windows and portals).

The wooden barrel vault - one of the oldest of its kind - and the Gothic rood screen from 1487, which separates the choir from the church, are remarkable . There is also a baroque organ in the Great Church . There is a box of honor for the patron of the parish, the Prince of Bentheim and Steinfurt and his family. The pulpit and organ did not come until after 1648.

The organ was built in 1968 by the organ builder Alfred Führer in an existing organ case from 1658. The slider chest instrument has 25 stops on two manual works and a pedal. The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
