Heribert Oel

Heribert Joseph Oel (born May 14, 1925 in Rüthen-Drewer ; † June 26, 2006 ) was a German materials scientist.

Life

Oel studied physics, mathematics and chemistry at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . In 1954, he was with a work from electrochemistry doctorate . After an assistant at the Institute for Physical Chemistry at the University of Göttingen (1954-1958) he was from 1959 a research assistant and department head at the Max Planck Institute for Silicate Research in Würzburg . There he completed his habilitation in 1964 with the text Determination of the size distribution of particles, crystallites and pores .

In 1968 he received a call as a full professor at the previously newly founded chair for glass and ceramics at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg . In 1970/1971 he was dean of the technical faculty as well as a member of the senate and construction officer of the university. In 1993 he retired .

His scientific focus was on electrochemistry , electroceramics , oxidic special ceramics, raw and building materials, strength of glass and ceramics, tableware, decorative and building ceramics, quality assurance as well as glass development and glass finishing.

During his professorial career, Oel trained around 270 qualified engineers in the field of glass and ceramics and supervised 120 doctoral theses.

Heribert Oel was a long-time board member of the German Glass Technology Society and the German Ceramic Society and later an honorary member. He was awarded honorary doctorates from Alfred University in New York , Université Rennes and the University of Latvia in Riga .
