The Great Mosque of Niamey ( French : Grande mosquée de Niamey ) is the central Friday mosque in Niamey , the capital of Niger .

Location and architecture

The Great Mosque of Niamey is located in the Abidjan district of the Niamey III arrondissement at the intersection of the Boulevard Mali Béro and Avenue de l'Islam. The Niger River , on which the city center is located, runs about three kilometers southwest of the mosque.

Inside the Great Mosque

The building, located in a spacious, unobstructed area, has a light facade, several bluish-green gleaming domes and a tall, slender minaret that can be reached via 171 steps. The mosque has seats for 10,000 people.

history

The Nigerien head of state Seyni Kountché laid the foundation stone for the mosque on February 25, 1977. Its construction was financed by Libya under Muammar al-Gaddafi . In the 1970s, Libya also supported the construction of mosques for propaganda purposes in the capitals of other African countries with a predominantly Muslim population, such as Banjul in Gambia and Conakry in Guinea . The Niamey Great Mosque was completed in May 1989. A few days later, al-Gaddafi called on Niger to join the Arab Maghreb Union he co-founded .
