The Große Pönitzer See (often just called "Pönitzer See") is a lake in the municipality of Scharbeutz - southeast of Pönitz - in the Ostholstein district in Schleswig-Holstein . The village of Pönitz am See lies directly on its northern bank and the village of Klingberg on its southern bank .
It is located in Holstein Switzerland , surrounded by a hilly moraine landscape . To the north of it is the Kleine Pönitzer See , into which it drains via a ditch.
The lake has a round shape with a bay in the north and is approx. 1400 meters long and 1100 meters wide. It has a size of about 108 hectares and a maximum depth of 19.2 meters, which it reaches in its center. The lake is fed by rather insignificant tributaries.
Gut Garkau is located on its southwestern bank .
