The Good Garkau is a farm in Klingberg in the community Scharbeutz in Ostholstein in Schleswig-Holstein , directly on the southwest shore of Grand Lake Pönitzer located. It's an example of organic building .

history

Gut Garkau was built between 1924 and 1926 according to plans by the Bauhaus architect Hugo Häring and is considered to be his main work. The client was Otto Birtner, who had got to know current developments in agriculture in the USA and now wanted to implement them on his own farm. From the original planning of the property as a uniform yard, only the cowshed, the barn and a tool shed were realized; the manor house, a pigsty with an attached horse stable, a henhouse and manure could not be realized.

The five buildings of the estate are arranged around an elongated courtyard oriented in a north-west-south-east direction. At the north-western end of the courtyard is the cowshed made of red-violet brick with its wood-clad upper floor, which, despite its sculptural appearance, was developed entirely from its function in line with organic building. It offers space for a bull, 42 dairy cows and 23 young animals. The arrangement of the cows around a central “feeding table” enables direct feeding through openings in the upper floor, which serves as a hayloft . Also noteworthy is the barn with a Zollinger roof with a large column-free interior.

After the war, farmer Walter Röders bought the farm and his son Dietrich Röders ran it until 1994.

1973 Gut Garkau stopped dairy farming because the small herd of 42 animals was no longer competitive due to cost reasons . The demolition of the cowshed was prevented in 1975, the campaign by the State Monument Preservation “Gut Garkau must not die” attracted a great deal of attention and a comprehensive restoration was carried out, which was completed in 1976.

Gut Garkau is a “cultural monument with national cultural significance” under monument protection . The estate is no longer farmed, the cowshed and barn are empty and have not been open to the public for several years.
