The Große Peetscher See is a lake in the Dreetz municipality in the Rostock district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The little indented flat water lake north of the eponymous village Peetsch is located in the Warnow Valley . The lake was originally much larger and deeper as it was without natural water drainage until 1780. Then it was connected to the Nebel via the Hullergraben , which sank the water level and created the Small and Large Peetscher See. In 1977 the drain was expanded to further drain the area around the lake. The drained areas are mostly boggy, especially towards the Kleiner Peetscher See.
The lake is 1390 meters long and about 600 meters wide. It is located in the nature reserve Peetscher See .
The lake is of great importance as a feeding, breeding and resting habitat for numerous bird species. The forests on the north bank are rarely managed, as several areas have been designated as total reserves (protective forests) since 1976 . It is planned to wet the surrounding moor.
The name Großer Peetscher See is derived from the Old Slavic word for pêsŭkŭ for sand .
