Great strife
In Swedish and Finnish historiography, the time of the Russian occupation of Finland from 1714 to 1721, i.e. during the Great Northern War , is referred to as Great Discord , Swedish stora ofreden , Finnish isoviha (literally "great anger / hatred") .
During this period of occupation , Finland was ruled by Russian military . Resistance movements flared up in the form of partisan struggles . In response to this development, the Russian commanders forced the native rural population to pay high reparations . Overall, the time is marked by looting and deportation into slavery in Russia . Tens of thousands of Finns were in forced labor to Russia deported ; few of them returned. Most of the Finnish clergy and nobility fled to Sweden. An estimated 60,000 Finns were killed or abducted during this period. The occupation ended with the Peace of Nystad in 1721, in which Sweden ceded the provinces of Swedish Estonia , Swedish Livonia , Swedish Ingermanland and the southeastern part of Finland to Russia.
The “great strife” is opposed to the “ small strife ”, as historiography describes the recent, but comparatively light, occupation of Finland in the Russo-Swedish War of 1741–1743 .
