The Great Holy Cross building in Goslar was built as a hospice in 1254 and offered the needy, the infirm and orphans , but also pilgrims and other travelers, a place to sleep and a supply of food.

The Great Holy Cross is the oldest surviving civic complex in Germany . It was founded with the political intention of displacing the Teutonic Knights with their hospital from the city. For the construction of the mighty hall building, a piece of land belonging to the knight's curia was used. In 1650, the small “Pfründnerstübchen” were built in the Dael, which offered space for a bed, a cupboard and a small table for the residents of the monastery. Today, artisans have settled in these small rooms and offer their works there. In addition to the artisans, exhibitions on the history of the house and the hospital system are housed in two chambers of the Dael.

Many Romanesque components such as windows and the chapel dedicated to John the Baptist are still preserved today. The special thing is that modern old people's apartments are now located in a side wing, and so the building is still fulfilling its social role 750 years after it was founded.

On the upper floor in another wing of the building, the Kemenate , built in 1230 , you can see the collection on the history of the Goslar Jäger Battalion, accessible from the courtyard . The exhibition is considered to be the military history museum of the city of Goslar.
