The Great Moor is a largely peat high moor area in the municipality of Beverstedt in the district of Cuxhaven . The moorland lies west of Bokel and south of the Hollener Heide in the lowland through which the Wandsbeck, a tributary of the Lune , flows .

The moor developed in silting lakes from around 3000 years before our era. Impermeable clay layers in the subsoil favored the development of the bog. With the development of the moors, drainage, peat extraction and subsequent cultivation began . This destroyed large parts of the Great Moor.

In 1986, 250 hectares of the Great Moor were included in the Lower Saxony moor protection program. The moor was still being pelted at that time. The peat extraction did not end until 1991. Only rural hand peat digging is still carried out in small areas. Large parts of the moor were cultivated for grassland , arable land and forest .

Through a land consolidation process , the surfaces lying in the core zone of the Moores were in which, although drained the bog, but had been not or not fully abgetorft summarized and the end of 2003 rewetted , then that the bog to regenerate here. The approximately 100 hectare area is characterized by peat cuttings filled with water and waterlogged areas, moor forest and moor heaths .

In the southern part of the rewetting area there is an approximately one kilometer long nature trail with information boards, a show peat engraving and an observation tower. Another hiking trail runs from the moor to Oberheise and Heise. From here the peat was shipped via the Oberheiser Schiffgraben or the Heiser Schiffgraben and the Gackau to the Lune and on to Bremerhaven .
