The Großhöbinger prince grave or prince grave of Greding is an archaeological find in Bavaria.

Find history

The construction of the new Nuremberg-Ingolstadt line made major earthmoving necessary. As a result, several archaeological finds came to light.

Among other things, it was necessary to enlarge the bridge of State Road 2227 over the A9 near the Großhöbing district of Gredingen so that it also spans the new line. For this purpose, the bridge was moved 350 m to the northwest and the connection to State Road 2391 changed. When building the connection, a wooden wagon wheel was first found. It was the first such find in Bavaria and the second in southern Germany. Afterwards, a field of 200 graves with skeletons and additions from the early Middle Ages was found. The royal grave from around 700 AD was found in this in November 1997 ( location ). Martin Nadler was in charge of the excavation. The clothes and the weapons showed that they were graves of high-ranking people.

The five people were buried in two oak coffins two meters below the ground. They were likely murdered together in an event. The clothes were only put on them after death. All wear a tunic. They had stab wounds and smashed skulls. The boots were not suitable for walking. The person on the far left is the highest ranking person in the grave. It had a collar made of gold, which was made in the Byzantine Empire . The man was the only one who had a sword as a grave goods. The other four people had a sax . The hands of the prince and his neighbor were interlocked. The other three people also had their hands clasped.

Presentation of the find
