Great stone graves near Strothe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The megalithic graves near Strothe were three megalithic graves from the Neolithic funnel cup culture near Strothe , a district of Himbergen in the Uelzen district ( Lower Saxony ). They were destroyed in the 19th century. The graves were documented by Georg Otto Carl von Estorff in the 1840s , but only one was described in detail by him; it bears the Sprockhoff no. 770.

location

Location of the graves according to von Estorff (No. 1 and 13)

Grave 1 was north-east of Strothe, on the west side of the road to Groß Thondorf and perhaps already belonged to this field mark. Graves 2 and 3 were located northwest of Strothe in the middle of a group of burial mounds .

In the immediate vicinity there were originally numerous other graves: to the east, the megalithic graves near Groß Thondorf , of which only one still exists today, and the remaining megalithic graves near Kettelstorf, and to the south, the megalithic graves near Römstedt and to the west, the megalithic graves near Drögennottorf and the megalithic graves near Niendorf I. all of which were destroyed in the 19th century.

description

Grave 1

Floor plan of grave 1 after von Estorff

The complex had an east-west oriented burial chamber with a length of about 4.5 m and a width of 1.5 m. It was probably four-yoke . In von Estorff's investigation, all four wall stones were still visible on the southern long side, but only the two eastern ones on the northern side and also the end stone on the eastern narrow side. Since all the wall stones are drawn very narrowly on the floor plan, Ernst Sprockhoff suspected that they were very deep in the earth and only protruded with the tips. The remaining wall stones could still have been there and were only completely underground. Three of the capstones were still preserved, of which the western one was in situ and probably covered the western capstone . The eastern capstone had been shifted a little to the west, and another had fallen inside the chamber. The exact type of grave cannot be determined with certainty. Due to the size of the chamber, however, it must have been a large dolmen or a passage grave.

Graves 2 and 3

Although the two graves were still preserved when von Estorff took the picture, no information is available on the orientation, dimensions and type of grave. The card signatures only show that they had rectangular barren beds .
