The large stone grave Gasteren is a megalithic grave complex of the Neolithic western group of the funnel beaker culture in Gasteren , a district of Aa en Hunze in the Dutch province of Drenthe . The grave bears the van Giffen number D10.

location

The grave is north of Gasteren on a heather . There are several other large stone graves in the vicinity: 2.7 km to the northeast there is the large stone grave Schipborg (D7) and 3.4 km northeast of the large stone grave Anloo-Noord (D8).

Research history

The grave was first mentioned in 1694 by M. Bolhuis. The first restoration took place between 1869 and 1878. Several stones were moved. In 1878 the first documentation was made by William Collings Lukis and Henry Dryden . In 1918 Albert Egges van Giffen documented the facility for his atlas of the Dutch megalithic graves. Further restorations took place in 1952 and 1996. Since 1978 the complex has been a national monument ( Rijksmonument ).

description

The complex has an east-southeast-west-northwest oriented burial chamber with a length of about 6.7 m and a width of about 3.1 m. Originally it probably consisted of four pairs of wall stones on the long sides, one end stone each on the narrow sides and four wall stones. From 1918 Van Giffen was able to identify the four wall stones on the north and three on the south long side, the two end stones and two fallen cap stones. The exact type of grave is unknown. Perhaps, like most large stone graves in the Netherlands, it is a passage grave ; However, due to the poor state of preservation of the southern long side, it was no longer possible to determine whether a corridor had originally been located here. A stone enclosure could not be found.
