The large stone grave in Süpplingenburg was a burial complex of the Neolithic funnel cup culture between Süpplingenburg and Emmerstedt in the Helmstedt district in Lower Saxony . Today it is located on the edge of the sand pond in Süpplingenburg.
The large stone grave was discovered in 1976 by a farmer while plowing a field between Süpplingenburg and Emmerstedt. In 1977 and 1978 investigations were carried out by the Braunschweig district archaeologist Hartmut Rötting . From the grave complex 14 stone blocks made of local tubers of quartzite were found . The excavations revealed that the stones had already been relocated and sunk in the Middle Ages or modern times because they hindered the cultivation of the fields. It is believed that the tomb was made up of five pairs of carrier stones.
During the excavations, destroyed clay urn vessels with corpse fire were recovered. A decorated clay vessel made it possible to date the large stone grave from around 3500 BC. At the edge of the grave two urns from the 3rd century AD were found. This indicates that the Stone Age burial mound was still used as a burial place thousands of years later.
Of the 14 identified stone blocks 12 blocks were on the sandy pond in Süpplingenburg in 1982 translocated . A true-to-original reconstruction of the system was no longer possible due to the disturbance that had already occurred at the site of the find.
