In Frankfurt / Main he took his Abitur examination again, as his Abitur was not recognized in the GDR. In 1973 he examined the mixed-use cemetery of Cleverns , the excavation of which began in 1938 and was not finished due to the war. He wrote his master's thesis on the subject. Almost at the same time he examined an early medieval burial ground in Schortens . In 1976 he was appointed head of department for archaeological monument preservation in the Braunschweig administrative district , followed by a position as district archaeologist in the Institute for Monument Preservation of the Lower Saxony State Administration Office . His main focus was urban archeology in Braunschweig. In 1980 Rötting received a teaching position for prehistory and early history at the Technical University of Braunschweig , which made him an honorary professor in 1991 .
Rötting was one of the first to introduce interdisciplinary collaboration between archeology and scientific-technical subjects, for example in settlement archeology .
