The Großvogtei is a half-timbered house on Keßlerstrasse in Hildesheim .

History and description

The building was erected in 1662 by the then cathedral provost of Hildesheim, Arnold Freiherr von Hoensbroich, as an official residence for the grand bailiff of the Hildesheim cathedral provost . The builder's coat of arms is affixed above the door . With the words "by God's grace" to be read there, the lord of the new town and two villages places himself on the same level as gentlemen of higher rank. On the side facing the Kehrwiederwall, the house uses one of the few remaining pieces of the Neustadt wall as a wall. The cellar consists of medieval barrel vaults .

The building became the property of the city in 1851 and was sold to a master carpenter named Temme in 1871 . From 1979 to 1981 it was thoroughly renovated. Subsequently, the Lower Saxony State Office for Teacher Education and School Development has its headquarters there. As of January 1, 2011, the State Office was merged with the Lower Saxony School Inspectorate to form the Lower Saxony State Institute for School Quality Development (NLQ), whose head office is located in the Grand Bailiwick.
