Groombridge is a village of around 1600 people on the border between Kent and East Sussex in England. The nearest major town is Royal Tunbridge Wells , approximately 4.5 miles away.

The main part of the village ("New Groombridge") is in the Parish Withyham in the Wealden district of East Sussex. In New Groombridge there is a primary school with the Church of St. Thomas, part of the Diocese of Chichester of the Church of England . There is a general store, a bakery, a post office, a hairdressing salon, a car dealership and a pub.

The older part of the village ("Old Groombridge") is located in the Parish Speldhurst in the Borough of Tunbridge Wells in Kent and consists mainly of the Groombridge Place estate . In Old Groombridge is St. John's Church , part of the Diocese of Rochester. There is also an inn, but no shops.

The border between the two counties of East Sussex and Kent and thus between Old and New Groombridge is formed by the River Grom, which flows further west from the right into the River Medway .

history

Groombridge Place, with its manor house and surrounding park, is a popular visitor attraction, with an impressive 700 year history starting in 1239. Groombridge Place was owned by some of Kent 's finest families, including the Cobhams and Mr. Richard Waller, ancestors of the poet Edmund Waller and Winston Churchill .

A bird of prey reserve, the Raptor Center , has existed in Groombridge Place park since 1977 .

In Old Goombridge is Hospital Burrswood, an independent non-surgical hospital that treats the whole person in a Christian setting. Specialties include palliative and respiratory care, post-surgical care, rehabilitation, and physiotherapy. Burrswood was founded in 1948 by Dorothy Kerin as a result of her own healing experience. In 2008 it celebrated its sixtieth anniversary and a memorial service was held at Rochester Cathedral .

railroad

Groombridge was on the Three Bridges to Tunbridge Wells Central Line (main line). Other stops were: Rowfant, Grange Road, East Grinstead, Forest Row, Withyham, High Rocks, Tunbridge Wells West and Tunbridge Wells Central. The line was closed on July 6, 1985.

Groombridge is now at the Museum Railway Spa Valley Railway connected and is currently the southern terminus of this coming from Royal Tunbridge Wells line. Groombridge station is to the east of the village. A joint ticket for the railroad and Groombridge Place is available.
