Grand Council building

The Grand Council building in Aarau is the seat of the Aargau Cantonal Parliament , the Grand Council . It is located south of the old town on the Upper Suburb, which leads past the building to the east. The building was built between 1826 and 1828. Facing the north front facade is the government building , which was built in 1811/34 and is the seat of the cantonal government . The Aargauer Kunsthaus is located northwest of the Grand Council building, and the Aargauer Cantonal Library to the west .

history

The building history of the Grand Council building is closely linked to that of the government building opposite. The Grand Council has met in the city hall since the canton was founded in 1803 . In 1811, the cantonal government decided to add two wings to the existing Löwen Inn, with the cantonal parliament taking over the west wing. The project was delayed for several years and the parliamentarians finally called on the government to act in 1823. The following year, she decided to build a separate parliament building on the hill behind the government building. A project by master builder Hemmann from Brugg was implemented ; the construction work lasted from 1826 to 1828. The cantonal library and the state archive were also housed in the Grand Council building until 1959 .

Building

The strictly classical Grand Council building stands in a tree-lined park parallel to the government building, which can be reached via an outside staircase and a vaulted bridge. An elongated wing with a central hall forms the front, which dispenses with ornaments of any kind. A hipped roof stretches over it . At the rear of the central hall there is the semicircular council chamber with rising rows of seats, which gives the architectural impression of a theater.
