Most of it is part of the municipality of Giswil in the canton of Obwalden .

geography

Most of it is located on the southern shore of Lake Sarnen in the northern part of the municipality of Giswil. The place is not an administratively or politically delimited unit from Giswil, so the boundaries are not precisely defined. Most of it consists of the relatively small, closed-up area of Schribersmatt with the school buildings and sports facilities as well as an extensive scattered settlement all around. A large part is separated from the Kleinteil district by the Lauibach . In the north, the Steinibach forms the border with Oberwilen, which belongs to the municipality of Sarnen . Camping Giswil is located on the lake near Steinibach.

history

In 1607 a first chapel was built in large part because the way to the parish church in the small part was too dangerous. Already in 1429 there were signs of independence for large and small parts. Documents mention two corporations “part rütihalb” and “part kilchehalb”.

Church of St. Anton large part

The large part of the Antonius Chapel, built in 1607, was rebuilt and redesigned in Baroque style in 1743 and finally demolished from 1844 to 1847 except for the tower and replaced by a new building. In 1872 the tower was raised and from 1938 to 1940 the chapel was rebuilt with an extension by two windows. The chaplaincy Grossteil was raised to a parish in 1971 and the building is therefore called the Church of St. Anton Grosteile . While the side altars date from the time of the new building in 1847, the baroque high altar was installed in 1956.

A picture of Christ comes from the demolition of a covered bridge over the Bluwelbach in 1933. In order to place this appropriately again, the small Schibenried chapel was built near a former wayside shrine.

Route 2 of a historic hiking trail runs through most of it and leads to many historic buildings.
