The Grotta del Colombo is a small stalactite cave and a Stone Age site near the village of Sano in the municipality of Mori in Trentino on the northeastern foothills of Monte Baldo .

location

The cave is located on the road to Sano di Mori on the south side of the mountain known locally as Doss Castion (above the Cameras stream), which is an offshoot of Monte Baldo. It is located about 220 m above sea level and looks out over the Cameras stream from the south. The valley of the camera connects the Adige valley in a west-east direction with the Basso Sarco, which belongs to the Garda basin.

history

From November 14, 1881, Paolo Orsi carried out a first excavation, as he had heard of bones and shards found there. This excavation is considered the first systematic excavation in Trentino; however, all the deposits in the cave were removed at that time. Of the total of 60 kg of bones that were discovered, only 13.5 kg can be found in the City Museum of Rovereto. The rest was lost after the excavation. They include finds from the Bronze Age, such as bones from dogs and horses.

From September 18 to October 30, 1970, another excavation took place under the leadership of the Municipal Museum of Rovereto . With the approval of the responsible Soprintendenza alle Antichità of Padua , some members of the Circolo Preistorico Roveretano , a group of people interested in prehistory, visited the cave on the weekends. In doing so, they followed Paolo Orsi's earlier speculations about possible sites and actually found corresponding paintings. Despite the destruction caused by the first excavation, further artifacts were found in the up to 5 m thick deposits. In addition, the microclimate could be reconstructed on the basis of organic remains and changes in the rock, for example through frost blasts. Its development corresponded to that of the entire region as well as that of the caves on the south side of the Po plain.
