The Groupe de Haute Montagne ( GHM ), based in Chamonix, is one of the two important Alpine clubs in France. It sees itself as an association that unites the elite of French and international mountaineers.

history

The club was founded in Chamonix in 1919 by members of the Rochassiers group, Parisian alpinism pioneers, who at that time mainly trained in the Fontainebleau forest , and became a member of the Club Alpin Français (CAF).

In 1927 he merged with the Club Académique Français d'Alpinisme (CAFA), which had been founded in Paris in 1925.

In 1930 the GHM, which is primarily aimed at the elite, left the CAF, which sees itself as an association for the general public, but at the same time concluded a cooperation agreement with it. Many of the CAF presidents were members of the GHM, including Claude Deck, Lucien Devies, Jean Escarra, Jean Franco and Maurice Herzog. The magazines of the two associations, the GHM's Alpinisme and the CAF's La Montagne , also merged in 1955 to form the new La Montagne et Alpinisme .

Role of the GHM

According to the association's website, its members are composed of the majority of the best French mountaineers, as well as many of the best foreign mountaineers. At the end of 1997 the GHM had 253 members, 45% of whom were not French.

The association was closely linked to the creation and maintenance of French alpinism with international significance. Numerous members of the GHM took part in major expeditions abroad, including: attempted ascent of Hidden Peak in 1936, led by Henry de Ségogne , ascent of Annapurna in 1950, Fitz Roy in 1952, Makalu in 1955 and the Muztagh Tower in 1956. The climbs followed des Chacraraju 1956, Jannu 1962, Mont Hungtington 1964, the north face of Nevado Huascarán 1966, the Pilier west of Makalu 1971 etc.

The association was involved in the creation of numerous guides, including the well-known Guide Vallot . Since 1955 he is also regularly a bulletin, Les Annales, véritable encyclopédie de l'histoire de l'Alpinisme en France et dans le monde ( dt. The annals, true encyclopedia of the history of mountaineering in France and the world ) out.
