Growing stone

The Growing Stone (also called Cwrt-y-Gollen) is a menhir ( Welsh Maen hir - English Standing stone ) northwest of Glangrwyney in Powys in Wales , which dates from the Neolithic or Bronze Age . It stands next to the A40 (road) from Abergavenny to Crickhowell, not far from the megalithic complex of Gwernvale . The road follows the valley of the River Usk with the Black Mountains to the north and the eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park . This route was renewed during Roman times.

The broken menhir made of red sandstone is about four meters high and has a cross-section of 70 × 120 cm. It's shorter but similar in shape to the Devil's Arrow in Yorkshire . It is the largest stone in an area rich in similar menhirs.

Growing stones ( German  "growing stones" ) are a geological phenomenon. The stones in spherical shapes made of cemented sand are created by seismic activity. What makes them unique is that they grow 6–8 mm after heavy rainfall.
