The Grüner Löwe mine was one of many iron and copper ore mines in the local area of Gosenbach near Siegen in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The pit was first mentioned in 1465. Funding was provided from the Grüner Löwer Tiefen Stollen and the 283 m deep shaft of the mine. From the 1750s it was reported that the production was about 5 tons of copper ore per year. Between 1836 and 1839, 18 tons of cobalt were mined. The iron ore extraction took place here the most:

  • 1855: 6,972 tons
  • 1857: 5,360 t
  • 1865: 5,567 tons
  • 1885: 10,364 tons

In 1885 there were 77 employees. In 1898 the mine became part of the Storch & Schöneberg union . But as early as 1906 the production was stopped. It was connected to the Storch & Schöneberger mine railway .

The corridor of the same name, the Green Lion, was around 120 m long and on average 1–4 m thick. Up to 8 m thick spate iron stone appeared in the upper depths ; in addition to iron ore, copper and cobalt ore were also mined.
