The mine service honor mark is a state award of the Republic of Austria and was founded in 1954 by the then Interior Minister Oskar Helmer . The mine service honor mark is awarded for the recognition of special rescue acts in mining as well as services in the mine service as well as mine rescue.

Award terms

The mine defense mark was awarded by the Federal Ministry of Trade and Reconstruction until 1966 by the incumbent Federal Minister (from 1966 then by the Federal Ministry of Trade, Commerce and Industry until 1987). Since 1987 the award has been made by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs . It can be awarded if the following conditions are met:

  • a) to members of a mine rescue team who have done a lot of work in rescue works underground;
  • b) to members of a mine rescue service who have provided mine rescue service in a satisfactory manner for 15 years;
  • c) to former members of a mine rescue service who had to retire from mine service before reaching a service period of 15 years due to an accident suffered during mine service and who also performed this service in a satisfactory manner;
  • d) to people who, under particularly difficult circumstances, either rescued people from danger to their lives in a company subject to supervision by the mining authorities or who averted an imminent significant danger from such a company and finally;
  • e) to people who have made very special contributions to mine rescue .

Proposal and award procedure

The proposals which should lead to the award of the honorary mark are to be sent to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs by the competent mining authorities. The ministry itself keeps a list of the awards. The mine defense badge then becomes the property of the borrower when it is handed over, who at the same time also receives a certificate of award from the ministry. Incidentally, the unauthorized wearing of the badge of honor can be penalized by the locally responsible administrative authority (currently up to € 21, as of January 1, 2002).

Texture, appearance and way of wearing

The miner's honor mark consists of a bronze medal with a diameter of 40 mm, which shows on its front a Maltese cross framed by laurel with outgoing rays with mallets and iron overlying it (symbol of the mine rescue). All symbols are embossed. The reverse of the medal shows the Austrian federal eagle, on which the three-line inscription can be read in the middle: FOR MERIT / IN THE PIT / RETTUNGSWESEN . According to Austrian tradition, the medal is worn on a 40 mm wide triangular ribbon with a black and green ribbon, which is lined on both sides in the colors of Austria, white and red. Owners wear the decoration in its original size on the left side of the chest. Miniatures and ribbon clasp (40 mm wide and 10 mm high) over the left breast pocket. Pin or rosette in the buttonhole on the lapel .

Others

Until an unknown date, the Czech company in Vienna was responsible for producing the mine rescue symbol .
