Data on the structure

The Guarapiranga Reservoir ( Represa de Guarapiranga ) is a dam in the south of the São Paulo metropolitan area in the state of São Paulo in Brazil .

In 1908 the reservoir was inaugurated for the purpose of generating electricity. Today, however, it primarily serves as a drinking water reservoir for a large part of the approximately 20 million inhabitants of the metropolitan region . Another reason for the establishment of the reservoir was the flood control of the Rio Guarapiranga and the Rio Pinheiros . The lake is fed by the Rio Guarapiranga and other smaller rivers that have their origins in the urban areas of São Paulo , Itapecerica da Serra and Embu-Guaçu .

There are numerous artificial beaches and marinas on the shores of the lake, which makes the Guarapiranga reservoir also important for tourism. So have u. a. numerous sailing and yacht clubs are based here. In 2011, the clubs' first beach soccer world championship, the Mundialito de Clubes, took place here
