Guem (born March 9, 1947 in Batna , Algeria as Abdelmadjid Guemguem ) is a French percussionist and dancer of Algerian origin who performs as a soloist with instruments such as Djembé , Conga or Darabouka .

Life

Guem grew up in an environment characterized by gnawa music . At the age of 16 he went to France. He lives in Paris . In the 1970s he played mainly in the Intercommunal Free Dance Orchestra of François Tusques , but also accompanied Michel Portal , Steve Lacy and the singer Colette Magny . In addition, he aspired to a solo career. In 1973 Guem released his first album, Percussions Africaines . Guem became known with the 1978 album Guem et Zaka Percussion . Since then he has produced numerous other albums under his own name. He not only deals with rhythms from North and West Africa, but also from Brazil , Haiti , Cuba and Mexico . The album Couleurs Pays , released in 2007 by Nocturne, presents rhythms from 17 different countries. His best known title is Le Serpent (which Guem plays on five congas); it is the theme song of the French television program Ça se discute (on France 2 ). The album Mon Paris (2011) pays homage to the artist's adopted home. A piece is dedicated to each of the 20 Parisian districts.

In addition to his artistic work, Guem works as a music and dance teacher, including a. at the Center des Arts vivants in Paris and at the ImPulsTanz festival in Vienna.
