Education and career

He then specialized in general surgery at the same university until 1993. For his PhD program, he moved to Tokyo , Japan , where he worked as a fellow of the Japanese Foundation for the Advancement of Cancer Research and became an assistant professor . For four years he headed the hepatobiliary surgery department at the Lodi Clinic and then returned to his alma mater , where he was appointed director of the liver surgery department at the University of Milan. During this time he taught in the field of radiological specialist training at the University of Pavia and in several other departments at Italian universities. Since 2006 he has been director of the liver surgery department at Humanitas Research Hospital. He is chairman of the AICEP (Italian Association for Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery).

Scientific and surgical activity

Torzilli has published over 200 scientific articles, edited two books, and written over 50 chapters in medical textbooks. According to Google Scholar , his publications were cited 11,624 (2020). His interest in intraoperative ultrasound examination of the liver and its vascular structure led to the development of several new techniques, such as liver tunneling, mini mesohepatectomy and upper transverse liver resection. The conviction expressed by Torzilli is that in tailor-made operations for malignant tumor diseases of the liver, the preservation of the parenchyma and the vascular framework should be pursued as an eminent goal. This strategy, to which much of his scientific and surgical activities are devoted, has come to be known as "parenchymal-sparing liver surgery".
