Guillermo Ortiz Martínez (born July 21, 1948 in Mexico City ) is a Mexican economist and from 1998 to 2009 chairman of the Mexican central bank Banco de México .

Life

Guillermo Ortiz Martínez is the son of Leopoldo Ortiz Sevilla and Graciela Martínez Ostos.

He studied economics at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and Stanford University . In 1971 he became the Mexican representative at the International Monetary Fund . He taught at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México and was Secretario de Hacienda y Crédito Público (Minister of Finance) under Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de León for three years . On January 1, 1998, he was appointed by Ernesto Zedillo as chairman of the Banco de México, replacing Miguel Mancera . In 2004 he was elected Chairman of the Banco de Mexico for a further six years on the recommendation of Vicente Fox . On January 1, 2010 he was replaced in this post by Agustín Carstens .

Ortiz is married and has three daughters.
