The Gulf Railway , also GCC Railway with GCC for the English name Gulf Cooperation Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council is, is a railway system that covers all six Gulf Cooperation Council on the Persian Gulf to join. The planned rail network should have a total length of 2177 kilometers.

history

The history of cross-border rail transport in the Arabian Peninsula dates back to the early 20th century when the Hejaz Railway was built from 1900 to 1908, connecting Damascus in Syria with Medina in Saudi Arabia . Although it was built to fulfill the noble aim of facilitating pilgrimages to the holy city of Mecca , the existence of the Hejaz Railway was short-lived as it was the aftermath of the Arab revolt - the Arab uprising against Turkish rule - and the First World Warfell victim. The Hejaz Railway was destroyed and abandoned in 1917.

More than a hundred years later, the Gulf Cooperation Council started a new project to connect the states on the Arabian Peninsula. One of the largest modern cross-border railroad networks in the world is to be built. The GCC Railway is intended to connect all six member states of the council. The railway is to run through the most important cities of the countries that will build the route themselves on their territory.

In 2009 the project was approved at the 30th Summit of the Gulf Cooperation Council states and the Gulf Railway Authority was appointed to carry out and monitor the implementation of the project. The project was originally supposed to be completed in 2018, but this could no longer be maintained after the collapse of the oil price in 2014 and was postponed to 2021-2023.

The total cost of the project was estimated at $ 240 billion in 2018

network

The planned railway network begins in Kuwait City and continues southeast via Dammam in Saudi Arabia . The line leaves the country at the Al Batha border crossing and leads to the cities of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates . The route continues to Oman , where Suhar is served and the route ends in Muscat . From Dammam branch lines will lead over the planned King Hamad Causeway to Bahrain and over the port of Salwa to Qatar . The friendship bridge between Qatar and Bahrain is intended to create an additional connection.
