from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gullfaks C is a drilling rig of Statoil at block 34/10 ( Gullfaks oil field) in the North Sea between the United Kingdom and continental Europe .

Gullfaks C has a weight of approx. 870,000 tons and is the largest oil drilling platform in Norway and one of the largest oil platforms in the world. The platform (length 142 meters, width 40 meters - above water) stands on four support pillars made of high-performance concrete and is 217 meters deep in the water. The total height of the structure is 380 meters.

There are a total of 330 beds on eight floors, 220 of which are in single cabins. Around 10% of the residents of Gullfaks C are female. Gullfaks C works in a rhythm: 14 days of work, followed by three weeks off, after another 14 days of work, four weeks off. Then this cycle repeats itself again. Gullfaks C produces 250,000 barrels of oil per day ( natural gas was discovered in the North Sea in 1959 and oil in 1970). The tank capacity is 300,000 .

The Norwegian mainland is 174 km away, making helicopters the most important means of passenger transport. Gullfaks C was completed in 1990 and is scheduled to operate until 2013/2014.
